About Hons Builders
Hons Builders has built a reputation as one of the Mobile bay area’s finest custom home builders. With over 35 years experience in the Gulf Coast home building business, John Hons has become quite knowledgeable about South Alabama Real Estate and building custom homes.
“Our company philosophy: We take pride in being Mobile’s ‘go to’ builder – whatever the home you’re envisioning.” – CEO, Jason Hons
Who better to tell you the Hons Builders story than the man who runs it – who’s taken the reins from his father after the first 30 years. That man is CEO Jason Hons. When he speaks of the company’s history and philosophy, you can hear his enthusiasm – his passion – for the business in his voice.
“Building Mobile custom homes is what I do. I’m not a guy who builds homes today and sells cars tomorrow. I’m a builder for life.” – CEO, Jason Hons
“I love it. It’s my passion. Home building is a people business. I love dealing with people and putting them in their homes. That’s my job, dealing with people one on one. I like leading them through the building process to where they understand every single decision and make them to their liking. A lot of builders build like they want to build it – but it’s not their house. It’s the customer’s house.”
For 90% of Mobile real estate buyers, their home is the largest single investment they’ll ever make. I see myself as their guide through the maze of decisions.” – CEO, Jason Hons
“I have to make sure they make the right decisions. Toward that end, I give them the pros and cons and let them make the final choice. I don’t try to force-feed them anything they don’t like for my own convenience or cost.”
“We are a true design-build builder. We draw our own floorplans or will customize an existing plan of your choice. Bring us your home-site – and we’ll build your dream home on it.” – CEO, Jason Hons
“We’re a very versatile company. That’s the fruit of 35 years experience. We can adapt ourselves to your objectives. Some customers want a home with great curb appeal – but can’t afford the top finishes inside. We can adapt to that. Some can afford to do 5,000 square feet of uncompromised luxury. We can do that too. Most builders find a niche, a comfort zone, and stay there. At Hons Builders, customer satisfactory and customer service drive our process.”
A little Mobile history: Hons Builders custom home expertise is based on long experience.
It was more than 35 years ago that John Hons sold the family farm and got into construction. Over the years, he built everything from bridges to commercial buildings to houses. As he made the transition to home building, he learned hands-on all the myriad skills and crafts of his trade – like masonry work, trim-work, and frame work.
Doing every job himself, he learned home construction top to bottom, inside and out, from the slab up. He learned the right way and the wrong way. That uncompromising commitment to excellence underpins the Hons’s approach to custom home building to this day.
Like father, like son: in home construction, there is no substitute for hands-on experience.
His son Jason will tell you that he grew up in the business – dad’s best helper since he was 12. Like his father, he did every task required to raise a house. He became proficient at trim carpentry, roofed houses, framed them in. He poured slabs – and even did the landscaping.
“If you haven’t roofed a house, if you haven’t poured a slab, how can you tell your subs how to do it right? Experience. Anyone can get a builder’s license and go out there and start building – gambling with people life savings. Not at Hons.”
this experience that gives the company its versatility – and also the knowledge required to mold their subcontractors on how it’s to be done – not how they want to do it.
“After 35 years in Mobile custom homes, we know who the good subcontractors are.” – CEO, Jason Hons
“We’ve become the builder that builders look up to. By that I mean that area builders come to us to get their subs. They know we’ve found the very best and trained them to do it the right way the first time. It’s one reason we can offer such a complete warranty plan. We get it right the first time.”
These days, John still keeps a hand in – though five years ago his son took over the day to day operation of the business.
Builder versatility is also reflected in the balance of Hons management team.
Jason is joined in management by Cliff Weatherby and Robert Cooper. Cliff has been with Hons for five years and brings a varied background in surveying and commercial building to the team. He functions as the overall office manager. Robert has been with the firm for a year and is the job superintendent for the dozens of homes Hons Builders has underway at any one time.
“We’re a spec home builder on one level. But our spec homes are like most builders custom homes.” – Jason Hons
“For instance, we do slick ceilings and slick walls. We don’t try to cover up any flaws. We put a high-end appointments package in all our spec homes. We build our specs from 1500 square feet to 6,000 square feet – and yet our smaller homes will have the same amenities as the larger homes. And built to the same high standards. After all, we use the same subcontractors for all our homes.”
“We’re glad to give free estimates. Our goal is to give Mobilians what they want. We want to make Mobile aware of what they should be getting out there in the marketplace.” – CEO, Jason Hons
“I would just say to folks shopping for a builder, ‘Beware of the bait ‘n’ switch.’ Some builders will tell you what you’ll get – then change in the middle of the contract. We don’t do that. Your price at the beginning is your price at the end. We’re straight shooters. We make people aware of what they’re getting – not hide behind smoke and mirrors.”
“Nobody can build a perfect house. Small mistakes are inevitable – but our warranty work gets done – in a timely manner and to your satisfaction.” – CEO, Jason Hons
“As long as we get out there and take care of it in a timely fashion, everybody is happy. That’s our goal. We have a fantastic warranty program If somebody needs a repair, they go to our website and fill out a warranty request. They send it to us and it gets done the next day. We one of few builders who take care of their warranty work. People are busy, they have jobs. We work around that, accommodate their schedules.”
